Maó, 1977. Jordi Fortuny obtained his PhD in cognitive science and linguistics in 2007 at the Universitat de Barcelona with his dissertation The emergence of order in syntax, which was supervised by Dr. Jaume Solà, from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

He has been an invited visiting student at the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2004), a Catalan lecturer at the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures of the University of Massachusetts Amherst (2006-2007), a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Linguistics of the University of Groningen (2007-2009), a Juan de la Cierva researcher at the Centre de Lingüística Teòrica and the Department of Catalan Philology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (2009-2012) and a Beatriu de Pinós researcher at the Department of General Linguistics of the Universitat de Barcelona. He has visited the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics of the University of Cambridge with a scholarship for short stays granted by AGAUR (2013).

His research activity is focused on theoretical linguistics. He works specially on generative syntax and formal semantics, and has a particular interest in applying mathematical methods to the study of certain general linguistic properties, such as duality of patterning, ambiguity, the hierarchical organization of syntactic objects, or the principles that constrain what can be expressed in natural languages.

He has been responsible for the subproject Syntactic nuclei of the project Dependency in Universal Grammar, supported by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO); the principal investigator of the project Dependency in Universal Grammar was Dr. Jan-Wouter Zwart and the University of Groningen was the hosting center. He has also been responsible for the research project Juan de la Cierva JCI-2009-04208, supported by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, and the Beatriu de Pinós project (modality B) entitled Design features of language and parametric learning, supported by AGAUR. He has obtained a scholarship for short research stays (modality B), granted by  AGAUR, to develop the project Parametric procedures of linguistic analysis and bootstrapping mechanisms at the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics of the University of Cambridge.
